RECOMMENDED MOTION:

None.  This item is for informational purposes only.

SUMMARY:

The purpose of this agenda item is for the board to receive a report from EAA staff on the EAA’s abandoned well program.  Abandoned wells have the potential to pose risk to the Edwards Aquifer by acting as conduits for contaminants to enter the system through the well bore, if the well is in poor repair.  Staff will discuss the methodologies used to find, assess, and subsequently rank risks associated with abandoned wells.  In addition, staff will demonstrate a GIS based model, developed at the EAA for estimating risk factors.  Added risks may result from adjacent land use, facility type, presence of known contamination incidents, and other factors taken into consideration by the model. This report will presented by several EAA staff members: Mr. Roger Andrade, Groundwater Protection Manager; Ms. Mariah Bonham, Environmental Coordinator; and Ms. Taylor Bruecher, Environmental Analyst.

STRATEGIC PLAN REFERENCE:

This agenda item supports the EAA's policy direction as set forth in the EAA 2016-20 Strategic Plan: Goal D. Prevent the Pollution of the Aquifer.
